Postpartum care includes care of mom and baby in the days and weeks following the birth. The midwife will come to your home on days 1, 3, and 7 following the birth. Follow up office visits will be done at 2 and 6 weeks after the birth. During these visits the midwife will check on your bleeding, vital signs, uterus, emotional adjustment, support system, sleep patterns, nutrition and elimination as well as your baby’s vital signs, color, cord, behavior, feeding and elimination patterns. She will also assess any breastfeeding issues and give referrals to lactation consultants when necessary. The first weeks after the birth are a tender time of fluctuating emotions, sleep deprivation, relationship changes and adjustment to being a parent. Good support and appropriate guidance is crucial in making this awesome transition as smooth as possible.
